Austrian defense company STI Steyr is vying for one of the country’s largest military vehicle procurement programs, offering its Light Multi-Mission Vehicle (LMV-X) and Light Tactical Vehicle (LTV-X) platforms under a contract valued at nearly €1 billion ($1.1 billion).
As part of the initiative, the Austrian Armed Forces intend to procure several thousand vehicles across eight categories, including light and heavy armored vehicles, reconnaissance platforms, and infantry transport vehicles, according to Militär Aktuell.
The procurement process is expected to advance in the coming weeks, with bid evaluations paving the way for negotiations and potential contract awards.
STI Steyr faces competition from several international manufacturers, with the final selection expected to consider technical performance, delivery schedules, industrial participation, long-term support, and overall cost.
The company is positioning the LMV-X and LTV-X as a modular family of vehicles capable of fulfilling multiple operational roles using a common platform. This approach is designed to streamline logistics, lower life-cycle costs, and simplify future capability upgrades.
According to STI Steyr, both platforms feature an open and upgradeable architecture that can accommodate next-generation communications systems, sensors, electronic warfare suites, counter-drone technologies, and other emerging capabilities.
The company also stressed the economic advantages of selecting a domestic supplier, pledging to conduct complete vehicle production in Austria, invest approximately €30 million ($34.2 million), and work closely with local industry partners. Beyond meeting national defense requirements, STI Steyr sees the program as an opportunity to strengthen its export prospects amid rising European defense spending.
