LightPath Technologies has secured an $11 million follow-on contract to supply advanced infrared camera systems for counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) platforms. The order has been placed by an undisclosed global technology company and strengthens an existing partnership between the two organizations. The infrared cameras will be integrated into defense and public safety systems designed to detect, identify, and track unmanned aerial systems operating in sensitive environments.As part of the program, LightPath plans to gradually replace conventional germanium optical lenses with its proprietary BlackDiamond infrared material. Germanium has traditionally been the preferred material for infrared optics because of its ability to transmit thermal radiation, allowing cameras to detect heat signatures effectively. However, increasing supply chain concerns, particularly after China introduced export restrictions on germanium, have created uncertainty for industries dependent on the material.LightPath’s BlackDiamond material is designed to provide similar infrared optical performance while reducing reliance on germanium. The company confirmed that the transition will be implemented gradually throughout the program lifecycle.The latest contract adds to LightPath’s expanding defense portfolio. Earlier, the company received a $9.6 million order to supply cooled infrared cameras for defense and security applications. These systems use integrated cooling technology to reduce thermal visibility while maintaining high-quality imaging performance. Manufacturing is being carried out at LightPath facilities in Florida and New Hampshire.In 2025, LightPath’s subsidiary G5 Infrared also secured a $2.2 million contract from L3Harris Technologies to provide infrared cameras for the US Navy’s Shipboard Panoramic Electro-Optic/Infrared program. These systems support maritime surveillance by enabling detection and tracking of threats such as anti-ship cruise missiles, fast attack craft, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
