The Philippines is planning to acquire more than 500 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) as part of a major military modernization effort aimed at enhancing troop mobility and battlefield survivability. Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. confirmed the planned procurement, stating that the new armored platforms will improve operational safety, reduce the need for foot patrols, and strengthen deterrence by enabling faster military response. While specific procurement details were not disclosed for security reasons, the acquisition represents a significant upgrade to the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ land capabilities. The military currently operates Sabrah and FV101 Scorpion light tanks, M113 armored vehicles, various wheeled armored platforms, Kia KM450 and K151 Raycolt light tactical vehicles, as well as a range of artillery, engineering, and combat support systems. The announcement follows several recent modernization initiatives, including negotiations with Japan to acquire five retired Abukuma-class destroyer escorts and Type 88 anti-ship missiles. Earlier this year, the United States approved the sale of Bell 505 Jet Ranger X helicopters, while the Philippine Air Force expanded its fleet with five S-70i Black Hawk helicopters equipped with M134-H miniguns. In addition, the Philippine Navy signed a $580 million contract for two South Korean warships and has begun deploying BrahMos anti-ship missile systems procured from India.
