The Italian Navy has received its upgraded “Tritone” multi-purpose support vessel, delivered at Fincantieri’s Palermo shipyard. Designed for underwater operations, the vessel has undergone enhancements to improve mission capability and ensure seamless integration with the navy’s command and control network.

Built with a modular architecture, Tritone can deploy, power, and sustain a variety of payloads, including uncrewed aerial, surface, and underwater systems, while allowing future technology upgrades without structural modifications. The vessel will also serve as a testbed to shape concepts and requirements for the navy’s upcoming Multi-Purpose Underwater Domain Surveillance Vessels (UPSDS), expected to enter service around 2031.

According to Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero, integrating uncrewed systems into conventional platforms is critical as the underwater domain evolves into a complex mix of military, commercial, and dual-use technologies.

The Tritone delivery is part of broader modernization efforts by Fincantieri for the Italian Navy. Earlier this year, the company launched the Quirinale hydro-oceanographic vessel for mapping and scientific missions, as well as the lead offshore patrol vessel Ugolino Vivaldi (P 440). In addition to shipbuilding, Fincantieri is also working to enhance the cyber resilience of naval platforms.
