Saab has secured an 8.7-billion Swedish kronor ($900 million) contract from German shipbuilder TKMS to provide and integrate advanced combat systems, composite structures, and sensor technologies for four MEKO A-200 DEU-class frigates being built for the German Navy. Deliveries are planned between 2029 and 2032, with the agreement including an option for four additional frigates.

As part of the contract, Saab will deliver composite superstructures, the 9LV Combat System featuring the Combat Management System and Fire Control System, Sea Giraffe 4A Fixed Face and Sea Giraffe 1X radars, along with passive sensor suites for the new warships.

The award follows Germany’s parliamentary Budget Committee approval of a €6.3 billion ($7.2 billion) acquisition for four MEKO A-200 DEU frigates, enabling the formal contract signing with TKMS. An additional option for four more ships is estimated at €5.3 billion ($6.06 billion). The procurement came after Berlin canceled the F126 frigate program in June, with the MEKO A-200 DEU replacing the troubled project.

The 121-meter MEKO A-200 DEU frigate is designed to strengthen the German Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities. The vessel has a full-load displacement of approximately 3,950 metric tons, accommodates a core crew of 125 plus up to 49 additional personnel, exceeds 29 knots in top speed, and offers a range of more than 6,500 nautical miles. It can also carry two mission modules, operate up to two medium or one heavy helicopter alongside two UAVs, and deploy two rigid-hulled inflatable boats for operational missions.
