The US Army has awarded AM General an $82.2-million firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for the procurement of High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs), widely known as Humvees.
The latest award increases the contract’s total cumulative face value to $754.6 million. Specific work locations and funding allocations will be determined under individual orders, with the contract expected to conclude by August 31, 2028.
The Army continues to purchase HMMWVs despite ongoing efforts to replace the vehicle in several operational roles. In September 2025, AM General received a $50.9-million contract modification for 224 HMMWVs, following a $126.5-million order in July for M1165A1B3 variants.
The HMMWV program dates back to 1983, when the Army awarded AM General its first production contract for 55,000 vehicles. By 2012, production had surpassed 280,000 Humvees.
Replacement Efforts
In 2023, the Army selected AM General for an $8.66-billion Joint Light Tactical Vehicle follow-on production contract as part of its broader effort to modernize and replace portions of the aging HMMWV fleet. The agreement provides for the production of up to 20,682 vehicles and 9,883 trailers, with an initial award valued at $230.8 million.
The service is also exploring commercially derived utility vehicles for less demanding missions. Concepts based on the Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle and Light Service Support Vehicle have been proposed as more affordable alternatives, although neither has yet been established as an official program of record.
Additionally, the Infantry Squad Vehicle is replacing the HMMWV in certain infantry units, providing a lighter platform designed to improve rapid tactical mobility.
Humvee Capabilities
Introduced during the 1980s, AM General’s Humvee has received continuous upgrades and modifications over several decades. Depending on its configuration, the 4×4 vehicle can transport up to six personnel and measure up to 15 feet (5 meters) in length.
The vehicle can be equipped with a range of weapons, including 40-millimeter grenade launchers, .50-caliber and 7.62-millimeter machine guns, and anti-tank missile systems.
Powered by a 190-horsepower Detroit Diesel V8 engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission, the Humvee offers a range of up to 350 miles (563 kilometers) and can reach speeds exceeding 70 mph (113 km/h).
