Sweden’s Volvo Defense and Nordic Air Defence have announced a partnership to develop a vehicle-mounted counter-drone system, revealed during a defense expo in London.
The project will deliver the VIPRO solution by 2026, integrating Nordic’s Kreuger 100XR interceptor onto Volvo’s tactical truck platforms to form a pod-based anti-drone launcher. The interceptor can reach over 3 kilometers and uses artificial intelligence for autonomous tracking and targeting. Its modular design enables deployment on ships, aircraft, and land systems.
The effort addresses the rising threat from inexpensive tactical drones in today’s conflicts. In Ukraine, first-person view drones costing less than $1,000 have proven highly destructive, reportedly causing almost two-thirds of Russian vehicle losses.
Such developments highlight the vulnerability of transport and logistics vehicles, which remain vital for military operations. In February, Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration reinforced its reliance on trucks by ordering 775 units from Volvo and Scania for its armed forces.
