General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and Kongsberg Gruppen have reached a significant development milestone in their effort to integrate the Joint Strike Missile onto the MQ-9B unmanned aircraft system. Completion of the System Requirements Review and Preliminary Design Review confirms that the project has successfully moved beyond initial concept definition and into a more advanced engineering phase. The reviews, finalized in Norway, establish the technical foundation for integrating Kongsberg’s fifth-generation missile with both the SkyGuardian and SeaGuardian variants of the MQ-9B platform. The collaboration is jointly funded by both companies and aims to transform the MQ-9B from a highly capable intelligence and surveillance platform into a long-range precision strike system. Equipped with the Joint Strike Missile, the aircraft will be able to engage both maritime and land-based targets at extended ranges while maintaining its endurance and reconnaissance capabilities. The integration supports growing military demand for versatile unmanned systems capable of combining intelligence collection with precision engagement during complex operations. Once fielded, the enhanced MQ-9B is expected to provide armed forces with greater operational flexibility, improved stand-off attack options, and expanded mission effectiveness across both conventional and maritime security environments.
