Diehl Defence has delivered the first IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defense system to Estonia’s Air Defence Wing at Ämari Air Base, significantly enhancing the country’s air defense capabilities beyond its current short-range coverage.

Capable of intercepting aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles at distances of up to 40 kilometers and altitudes reaching 20 kilometers, the system provides a substantial increase in defensive reach. Each IRIS-T SLM fire unit generally consists of several launchers, a radar system, and a tactical operations center, supported by dedicated vehicles for maintenance, reloading, and logistics.

Its highly mobile design allows operators to quickly reposition assets in response to changing operational requirements and emerging threats. Estonia ordered three IRIS-T SLM systems in 2023 as part of its largest defense procurement effort to date, with the remaining systems scheduled for delivery next year.

According to Estonian Air Force Commander Brigadier General Riivo Valge, one of the system’s key strengths is its ability to engage targets at high altitudes, eliminating gaps that adversaries could exploit by flying above the coverage zone.

The IRIS-T SLM offers 360-degree protection and can simultaneously engage multiple threats while requiring a relatively small operating crew. Diehl Defence reports that the system has achieved an interception success rate exceeding 95 percent during operational deployments in Ukraine.

The acquisition falls under the European Sky Shield Initiative, a Germany-led air defense cooperation framework established in 2022 and now comprising 23 participating nations. Eight member countries have selected the IRIS-T SLM through the initiative’s joint procurement mechanism, which enhances interoperability and simplifies training, maintenance, and logistics support.
