Colombian security forces have rescued 39 civilians, including a minor, who were kidnapped by the National Liberation Army (ELN) in the Chocó region. The operation successfully freed the hostages, although two soldiers were killed during the mission. The civilians were reportedly traveling by bus when they were captured by the armed group. The ELN, considered the oldest active guerrilla organization in the Americas, continues to operate in remote regions of Colombia and finances activities through illegal operations, including drug trafficking and extortion. The failed peace negotiations initiated under President Gustavo Petro’s administration highlight the continued challenges facing Colombia’s security forces.
