The UK has announced plans to replace its Type 45 Daring-class guided-missile destroyers with six Common Combat Vessels (CCVs) under its latest Defense Investment Plan. Scheduled to enter service in the early 2030s, the new warships will take the place of the previously proposed Type 83 destroyers and are being designed to operate alongside unmanned aerial, surface, and underwater systems.
The government has allocated funding to begin the CCV design phase as part of its strategy to build a hybrid fleet that integrates crewed and autonomous platforms rather than relying on a limited number of large, high-cost warships. The CCVs will serve as command hubs for multi-domain drones while enhancing air defense and expanding operational reach without significantly increasing personnel or operating costs. They will operate alongside Type 26 City-class and Type 31 Inspiration-class frigates, as well as autonomous platforms such as the Type 91 missile barge, Type 92 underwater sensing vessel, Type 93 submarine, and Type 94 surface sensing vessel. The initiative also supports Britain’s Atlantic Bastion, Atlantic Shield, and Atlantic Strike programs aimed at countering Russian activity, protecting undersea infrastructure, and strengthening NATO operations.
