Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has launched a new innovation initiative under its DRISHTI challenge framework, inviting proposals for the design and development of a high-fidelity digital twin software model for a gas turbine starter engine. This effort reflects HAL’s increasing emphasis on data-driven engineering to enhance performance monitoring, predictive maintenance, and lifecycle management of critical aerospace systems.

The digital twin is intended to accurately replicate the real-world behavior of a gas turbine starter engine using advanced modeling techniques. It will enable simulation, diagnostics, and optimization within a virtual environment, providing precise insights into engine performance under varying operating conditions. By adopting a data-driven approach aligned with user requirements, the system aims to reduce dependence on costly physical testing while improving decision-making efficiency.

A central requirement of the DRISHTI challenge is the development of a modular software architecture that integrates multiple functional layers, including analytics, prognostics, and visualization. This structure will support seamless data processing, early fault detection through predictive algorithms, and user-friendly graphical interfaces, ensuring both technical robustness and operational usability.

The initiative also emphasizes rigorous validation and verification frameworks to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and effectiveness of the digital twin. Such measures are critical in aerospace applications, where even minor discrepancies between simulated and real-world performance can have significant consequences.

HAL has outlined detailed deliverables, including complete source code, comprehensive technical documentation, and user training materials. This highlights its intent to not only develop the solution but also institutionalize its use across operational and maintenance units for long-term scalability.

The project will follow a structured lifecycle approach with phased development, incorporating risk mitigation strategies and clearly defined acceptance milestones. This framework is designed to ensure continuous validation, timely execution, and alignment with HAL’s operational objectives.
