Australia has successfully tested its first domestically produced Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missiles during a live-fire demonstration at the Woomera Test Range. The GMLRS, a precision-guided surface-to-surface munition, uses inertial navigation to strike targets at ranges exceeding 70 kilometers. This milestone forms part of a broader effort to strengthen Australia’s local missile manufacturing ecosystem under the Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) Group, led by Lockheed Martin Australia.

The trials were conducted by the Woodside-based 14th Regiment Royal Australian Artillery, operating under the Australian Army’s 10th Brigade long-range fires formation, using the M142 HIMARS. Data gathered during the tests will support validation ahead of a full certification flight test scheduled for next year.

The results will also contribute to future domestic assembly of advanced munitions, including the Precision Strike Missile and other hypersonic systems. Canberra noted that this marks the third live-fire test of HIMARS since its induction into service in March 2025.

The demonstration follows the establishment of a dedicated GMLRS production facility by Lockheed Martin in Port Wakefield last December. The site is expected to scale up operations as production expands, strengthening Australia’s defense industrial base and reinforcing the global supply chain for MLRS munitions.
