Embraer has completed the upgrade of two SABER M60 radar systems used by the Brazilian Army to the 2.0 configuration, as part of an ongoing effort to modernize operational equipment. The broader contract covers eight systems and is aimed at extending their service life while preserving air defense capabilities. This mid-life upgrade strategy focuses on enhancing reliability, availability, and performance through updated technical standards, while maintaining uniformity across the fleet.
The upgraded radars have already entered active service, with the remaining units scheduled for modernization under the same program. The initiative builds on earlier deliveries, including two SABER M60 systems supplied to Brasília in 2022.
The SABER M60 is a 3D low-altitude surveillance and fire-control radar with a detection range of up to 60 kilometers and the ability to track as many as 60 targets simultaneously. It plays a key role in safeguarding critical infrastructure within the Brazilian Army’s short-range air defense network.
The 2.0 upgrade introduces both hardware and software enhancements. Software improvements include advanced signal processing algorithms designed to improve detection and tracking accuracy, particularly in electronically contested environments. The user interface has also been refined to support faster and more intuitive operation during high-tempo missions.
Engineered for integration within layered air defense systems, the radar can operate alongside missile and gun-based platforms. It also incorporates Low Probability of Interception (LPI) features, reducing its visibility to adversary sensors.
