A containerized version of the US Navy’s 60-kilowatt-class HELIOS laser weapon is gaining momentum as US lawmakers advocate increased funding for more deployable and flexible directed-energy capabilities.

The proposed configuration would enable the laser system to be integrated across a broader spectrum of naval platforms, including aircraft carriers, amphibious assault ships, expeditionary sea bases, sealift vessels, and surface combatants. If fielded, the concept could strengthen close-range defense against drones, fast attack boats, and incoming missile threats, while also supporting fixed-site and coastal defense missions.
