Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Kanpur to jointly develop indigenous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), ballistic technologies, and advanced defence systems. The collaboration aligns with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative by integrating cutting-edge academic research with the manufacturing capabilities of a state-owned defence enterprise.
The partnership will leverage IIT Kanpur’s expertise in defence innovation, including its recently established ₹50-crore Defence Drone Testing Facility and the approved National Military Drone Technology Hub, to accelerate the development of next-generation military technologies.
As a leading Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) formed after the restructuring of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), AWEIL brings extensive manufacturing capabilities for artillery systems, weapon platforms, and ballistic protection solutions.
The MoU establishes a seamless pathway from laboratory research, technology development, and patent creation at IIT Kanpur to large-scale production, system integration, and testing by AWEIL.
By jointly developing critical defence technologies, the partnership aims to reduce India’s dependence on imported military equipment while accelerating the delivery of indigenous solutions tailored to the operational requirements of the Indian Armed Forces.
