The US Senate Armed Services Committee has approved proposed legislation aimed at strengthening oversight of artificial intelligence and autonomous weapon systems used by the Department of Defense. Included in the fiscal year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act draft, the measure establishes requirements for testing, accountability, transparency, and human supervision of AI-enabled military technologies. The legislation would require meaningful human control over weapons systems and prevent artificial intelligence from independently making decisions related to launching or detonating nuclear weapons. The proposal reinforces the principle that commanders and military personnel must maintain responsibility for lethal force decisions.
