The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded contracts worth £3.14 million ($4.22 million) to Frankenberg Technologies, Greenjets, and Cambridge Aerospace to develop affordable drone interceptor systems under the Low Cost Air Defence Effectors (LCADE) program. The initiative aims to design and test cost-effective interceptors capable of neutralizing large swarms of inexpensive drones that could otherwise overwhelm conventional air defense systems. Beyond enhancing the UK’s counter-drone capabilities, the program seeks to accelerate defense innovation, speed up equipment delivery, and strengthen collaboration with industry and international partners.
All three companies maintain a presence in the UK and have pledged to expand domestic manufacturing, creating opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises in Cambridge, Milton Keynes, Bristol, and Stevenage. LCADE also forms part of the broader Low Cost Effectors and Autonomous Platforms (LEAP) initiative, a multinational collaboration involving the UK, Poland, France, Italy, and Germany. Each participating nation will first conduct its own competition before progressing to a joint development phase aimed at reinforcing Europe’s defense industrial base. Drawing on lessons from Ukraine’s rapid advancement in drone and autonomous weapons production since 2022, the program prioritizes rapid development, AI-enabled technologies, adaptable systems, and affordable interception, with large-scale production planned from 2027.
