The Austrian Armed Forces plans to launch its first domestically developed satellite, BEACONSAT, in early 2027 to enhance military navigation security and detect electronic signal jamming.
The satellite is being developed in cooperation with Austrian space company Gate Space and is designed to collect electronic intelligence data that can help identify jamming threats affecting military operations. According to Klaudia Tanner, Austria’s defense minister, the system will support secure navigation for troops operating across land, maritime, and air domains.
In recent years, several European countries have accelerated the development of military satellite capabilities to strengthen space-based intelligence and communications.
In June 2025, the Netherlands selected ICEYE to deliver its first operational intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance satellite system, providing the Dutch armed forces with space-based observation capabilities.
Later in October 2025, Spain successfully launched its largest military communications satellite, SpainSat NG II, which enables secure and high-bandwidth communications for defense missions.
In November 2025, Rheinmetall partnered with ICEYE to establish a joint venture focused on deploying Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites to enhance Europe’s space-based reconnaissance capabilities.
Meanwhile, in December 2025, Portugal also initiated plans to acquire its first SAR satellite, further strengthening its national intelligence and surveillance infrastructure.
