Indonesia and Australia have unveiled plans to deepen defense cooperation by pursuing new trilateral partnerships with Japan and Papua New Guinea, alongside enhanced intelligence-sharing efforts.
Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin outlined the initiative following discussions with his Australian counterpart Richard Marles, as reported by Reuters.
The announcement comes after a security agreement signed in February 2026, under which both nations agreed to consult one another in the event of a threat.
Marles emphasized that the facility would remain under Indonesian sovereignty while accommodating Australian training operations.
Officials also indicated that personnel from countries such as the Philippines, Australia, and Singapore could access the Morotai training site, as well as another facility being developed in North Kalimantan in cooperation with Singapore.
