The UK Ministry of Defence has shortlisted four defense companies to develop autonomous drone concepts designed to operate alongside the British Army’s AH-64E Apache attack helicopters under the Project NYX initiative. Anduril UK, BAE Systems, Tekever, and Thales will collectively receive 10 million pounds in funding to advance concept demonstrator designs for the program. The firms were selected from an initial pool of seven participants invited earlier this year to propose autonomous drone solutions. The competing concepts include a variety of unmanned aerial systems with differing levels of autonomy, payload options, and sensor capabilities. Over the coming months, each design will undergo evaluation before two finalists are chosen in autumn 2026 to proceed toward prototype development. If successful, the British Army aims to field an operational capability by the end of the decade. Project NYX seeks to pair Apache helicopters with unmanned wingman platforms capable of conducting reconnaissance, target acquisition, strike coordination, and suppression of enemy defenses, significantly improving battlefield survivability and combat effectiveness. Operating under a “command rather than control” framework, the drones will rely on AI-enabled autonomy to react independently to changing combat conditions while remaining within predefined mission objectives. The future platform is expected to feature vertical take-off and landing capability, carry payloads exceeding 200 kilograms, and include the supporting infrastructure required for deployment. The Ministry of Defence also expects the system to offer lower operational costs, reduced logistical demands, and simplified maintenance compared to conventional crewed aircraft.
