Greece has awarded Thales a contract to modernize the mission systems of the Hellenic Navy’s Hydra-class frigates.
The agreement covers the integration of the latest Tacticos Combat Management System, NS100 radar, and STIR fire-control sensors aboard the MEKO 200-based warships.
Thales will oversee the frigates’ mid-life modernization program while also providing local support and sustainment services. After the upgrades are completed, the company will continue working with Greek industry partners to maintain the vessels’ operational readiness.
Mid-Life Modernization
The upgrade program is designed to enhance the combat capability of the four Hydra-class frigates, the oldest of which entered service in 1992.
The NS100 S-band radar features dual-axis multi-beam active electronically scanned array technology, providing improved situational awareness, surface surveillance, and target tracking at ranges of up to 280 kilometers (174 miles).
Meanwhile, the STIR 1.2 EO Mk2 fire-control system combines radar and electro-optical sensors to enable accurate target tracking and engagement in challenging operational conditions.
The Tacticos combat management system will act as the frigates’ central command-and-control architecture, supporting tactical picture generation, sensor coordination, threat evaluation, action support, and weapon management.
Hydra-Class Frigate
The Hydra-class frigate is derived from the MEKO 200 platform developed by thyssenkrupp Marine Systems.
The vessel measures 117.5 meters (386 feet) in length with a beam of 14.8 meters (48.7 feet).
Powered by gas turbines, diesel engines, and controllable-pitch propellers, the frigate can achieve speeds of up to 57 kilometers (36 miles) per hour.
Its armament includes lightweight automatic naval guns, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Evolved SeaSparrow surface-to-air missiles, and torpedoes.
The frigates also feature a flight deck capable of supporting one Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk helicopter and can accommodate a crew of up to 170 personnel.
